Islam's Honoring of the Menstruating and Postpartum Woman, in Contrast to the Old Testament

Reads: 101

Description

Islam's honoring of women: menstruation and postpartum bleeding are viewed as a natural physiological state whose effect is lifted through devotional purification (ghusl); it is not a stigma attached to her essence, nor does it transmit any impurity to those around her. This is consistent with the general juristic principle: "The default state of physical entities is purity, and impurity requires specific evidence"—and no evidence has come regarding the impurity of the menstruating woman's essence, but rather what has come concerns only "harm" (adhā).
